Water Purification Design Challenge

Suggested Grades: K-8 | Length: 45 min

To explore water filtration and the importance of clean water, every team of students will receive 1 liter of dirty water and various materials and lab equipment to try to clean it. Each team has a goal to produce the cleanest water they can. This design challenge has students constructing their own filters using natural ingredients, making turbidity measurements and documenting their results. For young students this activity is heavily scaffolded and guided. The more advanced students will be conducting the experiment independently as teams.

Building and Mapping Watersheds

Suggested Grades: K-8 | Length: 45 min, with add-on 60 min

What does it mean that Colorado is a headwater state and why is it important? Can you predict the way Colorado rivers flow and why? Using a detailed hands-on Colorado relief map, young students will develop an understanding of how water makes its mark on the Earth while older students discover how and why Colorado shares water with its neighbors. Using an augmented reality sandbox students will build their own unique topography, with goals and challenges, as well as identify and explore the concepts of divides and watershed boundaries. By reading topographic maps, contour lines, and elevation, students will discover how to recognize watersheds and other features.

Add-on (optional)

Comparing Earth to Mars: Comparing the relief map of Colorado to a similar relief map of Mars, students will explore similarities and differences and discuss the history of water on Mars.
